Smith, Strege & Fredericksen began with Bayard Lewis, who started practicing law in the Wahpeton community in 1956. Mr. Lewis became a county judge in 1979, at which time Richard Smith, his associate, continued the practice. Fred Strege, who had practiced law for three years with the firm of Johnson, Milloy, Johnson, Stokes and Robinson, joined Richard in 1981, and together they founded the present Smith & Strege firm. In 1995, Janel Fredericksen joined Richard and Fred, subsequently becoming the firm's third partner. Since that time, Richard, Fred and Janel have been joined by associate attorneys Jason Butts and Amy Clark.
